BAUER MEDIA MENTORS GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS
TO LAUNCH 'Oh My GOSH!' MAGAZINE FOR PATIENTS

Bauer Media has teamed up with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to produce a magazine aimed at patients and drive awareness of the GOSH Volunteer programme - Activate. Bauer Media selected ten ‘Rising Stars’ – a training scheme to motivate and develop staff who have the potential to be future leaders of its business and brands – to mentor eight youth volunteers from GOSH and research, design, write, print, market and launch a free magazine for the patients at GOSH.

The result is Oh My GOSH!, a magazine half-dedicated to the older patients at GOSH, and the other half for the younger children and featuring exclusive contributions from Jesse J, JLS, McFly, Matt Lucas, Russell Brand and Katy Perry and the GB Blind Football team.

The Mentor programme was facilitated by Blue Phoenix who were briefed by Bauer to create a valuable learning experience for their ‘Rising Stars’ that would take them outside of their day-to-day environment and give them some leadership experience.

Blue Phoenix approached GOSH’s Head of Volunteering, Jamie Wilcox, to collaborate in creating a joint initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of youth Volunteers to be led and mentored by the Bauer team to create the first ever GOSH magazine for patients. The primary aim being for both parties was to grow from the experience: the Volunteers from gaining media knowledge and insights; the ‘Rising Stars’ from developing great mentoring skills.

Lisa Tookey, Associate Media Director of Grazia, who oversees the Rising Stars scheme at Bauer Media, said:

“We wanted to create a fun magazine for Great Ormond Street Hospital aimed at patients of all ages and to support the Activate Volunteer Programme.

“Our Mentors and the Volunteers have done a phenomenal job in producing this magazine within the space of four months. Each person has put their heart and soul into this project and done an outstanding job.”

Jamie Wilcox added:
“This project with Bauer Media and Blue Phoenix has allowed the Volunteer Services at GOSH to offer something completely different and innovative to our young Volunteers. Through this project they have gone on a journey, not only learning about the media and magazine production but also about the teams and the patients and the families who visit GOSH.”
